How Great Is Our God
I’m sure you know as well as I do that Life gets hard at times. And yes as Christians we believe that God supplies everything we need, and constantly has every aspect of our lives under control, but admittedly sometimes we can allow the stresses, situations and worries of life to drown out our faith and sometimes even the very voice of God.
We so often get fired up after inspirational sermons, encouraging conversations or spending time in the presence of God, but to keep it real, sometimes that fire can get quenched little by little when we deal daily with issues such as low self-esteem, financial hardship, bad relationships, bereavements, depression, anger…you know I could go on for a while. In the midst of these situations, it can be discouraging and sometimes we can question God or sometimes even get angry at him, because of our ignorance and lack of understanding. In situations such as these an essential question comes to mind: Do you know jus how great your God is?
I was reading the Bible the other day, and came across a story which was in 2 Chronicles 32. It was a story about King Hezekiah who was ruling over Jerusalem at the time, and the King of Assyria formed an attack against him. In a nutshell, Hezekiah encouraged his people and told them not to worry because the king of Assyria only had mere men to come against them, but they had a far greater power on their side. Hezekiah was constantly mocked by the opposition, who claimed that God did not have the power to deliver them from a great army such as themselves.
Hezekiah had faith in the God, and publicly declared in the midst of his enemy’s that He believed his God would deliver them, and of course it ended in victory. This may be a story that took place many thousands of years ago, but this is the kind of faith that we should be constantly aiming for, always remembering that the same God that delivered these people in the Bible, is the same God that still lives today. Not only lives, but lives within us and is always there to back case. It speaks in Matthew 10:29 about the fact that a sparrow cannot fall without God knowing, so how much more is He watching over us?
Nobody said that life would be ideal or perfect, it also states in 2 Corinthians 4: 8, “we are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed or broken. We are perplexed but we don’t give up and quit”. I heard a phrase that really stuck me once, which said: Don’t keep on telling God how big your situation is, tell your situation how big your God is! No matter how hectic life gets, always remember that God has it under control. And He wouldn’t allow you get into something, if He wasn’t capable of pulling you through it.
There’s a song that sums it up so beautifully and simply; “How Great is Our God?” At the point which you actually realise who the God is that you serve, everything else must fall into place. It says in the word, the fear of God is the beginning of all wisdom. To fear his is to acknowledge His position and just how great he is. That flesh has got to bow down, that depression has got to bow down, that temptation has to bow down, and that situation must bow down.
I just want to encourage you today; He is Lord over you, He is Lord over me, He is Lord over every situation, every circumstance, over any weapon the enemy could even seek to form against you (which cannot prosper by the way - check Isaiah 54:17). So I repeat again: Do you know just how great your God is?
