Using Jesus’ example, Jones believes that people of faith should no longer be “closet Christians.” In fact, he encourages believers to make the kingdom of God (God’s way of doing what He does) tangible such that “in your lifestyle you are standing for Jesus Christ outside of the church [building].”
In addition to being a minister of music and artist, unbeknownst to many, Jones is very much a businessman.
Business as Usual?
In 2000, Jones received a business administration degree from historical, Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Destined to be an entertainment mogul, Jones’ music career began in 2002 with his self produced album, 20 Yrs., 3 Mths. & 12 Days... By his third album, Jones’ unit sales as an indie equaled nearly 50,000—preparation for what was to follow.
Strengthening his influence in the mainstream marketplace stateside while creating viable opportunities abroad, Jones is now all about business. In 2006, he launched an ambitious plan to bring HURB music to the mainstream. From faith-based circles to urban platforms, Jones hit the road and participated in everything from Knotting Hill’s carnival and David Banner’s Heal the Hood concert to Radio One’s Dirty Awards and Billboard magazine’s R&B Hip Hop Conference and Awards. Unashamed of his faith, Jones established the kingdom of God in each venue. Through song or even conversation, he shared the love of Christ and even offered salvation when opportunity allowed.
People-directed and tangible Jones’ goals have garnered the attention of Radio One’s, The Spirit of Hip Hop where he often serves as guest host and Gospel music staple, Dr. Bobby Jones (no relation) who christened him “the new face” of the Bobby Jones Foundation. Together, Jones & Jones launched a campaign to promote Gospel’s first music conservatory. While, Jones comfortably shares stages with Hip Hop heavyweights, T.I. and Ludacris, he also shares creative brilliance with Gospel greats, Kirk Franklin and Smokie Norful among others.
As an entrepreneur, Canton Jones is a seasoned professional. Currently, he and wife, Ramona manage CAJO International, which is positioned in music, television, video, and global commerce to raise a new standard for young entrepreneurs around the world. Initiatives under the CAJO umbrella include the non-profit outreach organization, CAJO 4 Platinum, Kingdom Events, Seven Lions Media, Black Angel Records (CAJO Records), and a retail store called, The Independent. Community initiatives such as the Just Keep it Clean monthly talent competition is part of several ongoing initiatives that encourage youth and young adults to be abstinent, make wise choices, and maintain positive lifestyles.
Relentless Pursuit
Jones is not just an artist nor does he see music as simply entertainment. Jones represents a generation of believers relentless in their effort to bring a positive new sound to the Hip Hop and R&B genres. Music is a ministry tool by which Jones encourages a lifestyle that offers peace and prosperity for anyone pursing their purpose and/or their passion.
“I believe that my music is what you play when you leave [church]. You get the word but [my music] sustains you from Sunday to Sunday,” Jones said.
Kingdom Business will likely be archived as a musical classic--perhaps long before the business of the Kingdom is accomplished. Like Jesus however, Jones will continue to pass the test of putting others before himself; thereby establishing God’s kingdom. “How can you be of service to other people?” Jones queries. “Most people are all about self gain. [The Kingdom of God] is like business. The best businesses provide the biggest service to the most people and they get the most funds. That’s why they’re the most successful. When you start serving the most people you’re handling Kingdom Business...and the things you think money is going to get you will be added unto you.”
