Through Societies Eyes

Through societies eyes, we are labelled and are limited due to the expectations that are put upon us. Jesus came and proved psychological theories wrong, and came against the norm in society. That is one of the very things that drew people to him; they saw in him a hope and a faith, which went beyond the limits of society. Jesus did the unexpected; he didn’t base his life on earth, around what society thought normal. It is so easy to live a life that thousands have lived before.

I remember reading this quote in a piece of Christian literature, “The richest treasures are not found in gold mines, but are in the graves of people, who have lived and died without reaching their full potential.”

Society can limit us from achieving all that we can, for we are labelled due to our age, gender, culture, intelligence and occupation. This doesn’t mean to say, we shouldn’t set goals or make career plans, but as sons and daughters of the King, why should we limit ourselves? God has put inside each one of us the ability to overcome the labels of society.

When Peter and John went to pray, they didn’t offer money for they had none, but they knew they had something greater. (Acts 3:6) Yes, we may not have the intelligence of scientists or the wisdom of those who have gone before us, but it is our faith that allows us to pull off the labels that society have placed on us, and go beyond the limits and expectations.

In society’s eyes, David was just a teenager who should have been minding his own business and attending to his sheep, not out defeating giants. However, in God’s eyes he was the chosen one, who would lead his people and would be example for generations to come.

Esther was a woman of great faith, for she put her trust in God. Esther was just another Jewish girl in society, but God had bigger plans. She was the one who was going to remove her label from society and go beyond expectations, for it was not her place to go into the presence of the king and in doing so, she saved an entire race.

As Christians I believe it’s time to pull off our labels, no matter how old or young we may be. In the short life we have, let us not be afraid to remove our labels and reach our full potential.
