Sammy G ‘Plain an Simple’- The Album Launch, Birmingham (UK)
Saturday June the 7th was another exciting moment for Gospel Music in the UK, as Birmingham welcomed the debut album release of ‘Plain an Simple’ by Grime artiste- Sammy G. On this beautifully hot day the crowds from The Midlands poured into the very nearly sold out event. Performing in his native home town Sammy G mentioned to me that what he was expecting from the night was for it to be “like church without the formalities.”

It was definitely a God centred event with Sammy G and each supporting act presenting lyrics that brought Biblical messages and praises to God though Hip-Hop, Grime, Garage and R&B and a brand new style of music called ‘Raggage.’ ‘Raggage’ has been created by Sammy G and the producer of the album; Jimmy James. ‘Raggage’ is a combination of Ragga and Garage, this new style of music was performed by Sammy G and Jahaziel from a track off the album called ‘One Weapon.’ In Jahaziel’s absence his presence was still created thanks to modern technology; a pre-recording of his performance played in the background.

London based artiste Dwayne Tryumf gave an energetic performance with his foot stomping track- ‘Give Glory to God’, all I saw at this point was a sea of people dancing and hands flung high into the air moving from side to side, his presence on stage was truly Tryumfant, but all in all the night belonged to Sammy G. The album has been 18 months in the making and this was the artiste’s first opportunity to showcase it and he defiantly did, showing the diversity and range on the album. Sammy is generally known for being a Grime and Garage artiste, both of which involves fast pace beats, but this album showcases more than this. He explained to me that “I didn’t want it to be limited to one thing. I started off doing Hip-Hop rather than Grime. I wanted it to go across the board and show different types of music.” Later into the evening he performed one of the mellow tracks off the album entitled ‘Pure Silence’, featuring upcoming UK artiste- Monique and picked up the tempo with other tracks such as ‘Find Me’, which talks about simply being able to meet up with his friends and have fellowship. On one of his final performances Sammy G would have been able to just hang the mic over the crowd and leave it to them to perform the track ‘Good Book’, as they were able to recite all the words.

Sammy G ended the evening reflecting back towards the naming of the album with a poem that he wrote called ‘Plain an Simple.’

A MESSAGE FROM SAMMY
Sammy G would like to say that “the support for the launch has been overwhelming, it’s been encouraging, thanks to everyone that’s been supportive. I really can’t thank everyone enough.”
