Trip Lee 20/20

August 2008 will see the launch of the eagerly awaited ‘116 Clique Unashamed Tour’ in the UK; featuring US Holy Hip Hop heavyweight hitters Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii and Sho Baraka. After experiencing the dynamic ministry of Lecrae earlier this year in Birmingham courtesy of Gospel Link Promotions, we thought we’d give you a heads up on one fourth of the clique, looking at the recently release 20/20 album by Trip Lee.

Apparently Trip Lee has been around for a while. His first album ‘If They Only Knew’ was released in 2006 to critical acclaim, and to be completely honest, I haven’t heard it. However, after listening to his sophomore release, I’m convinced Trip Lee is not only here to make a mark on the holy hip hop fraternity, but to leave an insignia that will clearly identify Christ as the visionary behind the entire holy hip hop movement.

The album explicitly challenges its listeners to evaluate every area of life through a biblical perspective, and on this one, Trip’s vision is firmly fixed on Christ!

I have to say when I first received the 16 track album via download I was a little indifferent listening to it on my laptop; but the epiphany came once I dropped 20/20 in my car on the way to work. After going through a drought of hearing some constructive HHH, my thirst was quenched solely on the intro to the album alone. The album is definitely God-centred dealing with subject matters such as: being God focussed, intimacy with God and finding security in the presence of God. Some may think 20/20 is a hardcore album, fortunately there are a number of Hip Hop/R&B crossover tracks such as: Cling To You, Relief and Who He Is (big, big Choon!) which is officially now my mobile ring tune. There are also a few head-bangers on the album in the form of: Satisfaction and Inexhaustible. Trip also calls in a few favours from Tedashii, Lecrae, Flame and Sho Baraka. There are also other guest appearances which all adjoin this album appreciably.

Overall this is a very good sophomore release. The word is very clear and unadulterated; production is very tight and Trip has a very credible flow throughout. It’s a must have album for HHH lovers alike and for anyone that’s in need of a jolt into the reality of who Christ really is!
