Emerging from UK Gospel Garage Collective, Holy Commission Camp, Surrender have released a fresh and ground-breaking free Garage mix tape by the name of “Ghetto to the Gospel Volume 1”. With hard-hitting tracks such as “Change your Agenda”, “Lost Sheep” and “Educate” the dynamic duo effectively presented the undiluted Gospel in a real and relevant way.

Surrender consists of cousins, Favour (18) and K.i.d. aka Kingdom Inspired Determination (20), deriving from North and South London. Both being raised in Christian households, they have always had a basic knowledge of the Christian message. But it was only in 2006 that this message became real to them personally, and this led to “Surrender” being formed. These two individuals made a decision to unite together to show the nation and the world just how real God is through their musical gifting.

Although they have never strayed away from the aim of presenting the Gospel through their lyrics, the duo have never claimed to limit themselves to the genre of “Gospel”. They have always had the aspiration to push their music and message to reach wider secular arenas, in order for it to be accessible to people that really need to hear it. This has entailed them ministering at secular, as well as Gospel events. As K.I.D said “At any major record stores, the gospel section is for “Christians” and not really for a broader audience, and we are not just trying to reach one type of person…we pray, believe and hope our music touches everybody.”

Although their forte is UK Rap, their style reflects a general urban sound, which is a mixture between Hip Hop, R&B, Grime and Garage. Their vast array of musical styles is also reflected throughout this mix tape. Although most of it would be classed as Garage, in no way are they confined or classified to that genre. “Ghetto to the Gospel Vol 1”, is certainly a personal recommendation from myself, especially if you are in to this type of music.

Their eclectic styles and elaborate word play compliment their powerful lyrics, which add to their very distinctive sound. The quality of their music is in no way compromised in the straightforward message that is clearly emphasized throughout each track. As one of the catchy hooks says “Change your Agenda, Surrender to God”. Their straight forward approach and inspiring transparency through their music, in my opinion, puts them in a totally unique category. The whole concept of the mix tape is breaking down a transition from the “Ghetto”, which is not referring to a physical area, but a place of hardship, to the Gospel, a life of fulfillment in Christ.
